A Saint for Our Digital Age: The Canonization of Carlo Acutis
Posted by Ji Sun DeLaughter on Sep 8th 2025
On September 7, 2025, history was made in St. Peter’s Square as Pope Leo XIV declared Carlo Acutis a saint, the first millennial ever to be canonized in the Catholic Church. Alongside him, Pier Giorgio Frassati (Read about Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati) was also elevated to sainthood. The ceremony drew tens of thousands of pilgrims, with a remarkable number of young people present, inspired by Carlo’s story and faith.
Who Was Carlo Acutis?
Carlo was born in 1991 in London and grew up in Milan. From an early age, he showed a love for the Eucharist and a natural gift for technology. Self-taught in programming and web design, he used his skills to spread devotion, most notably through his online catalog of Eucharistic miracles.
Often called “God’s Influencer” and the “patron saint of the internet,” Carlo believed that technology should be a tool for evangelization, not distraction. His faith was simple yet profound: daily Mass, prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, acts of charity, and a joyful heart.
Carlo passed away from leukemia at just 15 years old in 2006, offering his sufferings for the Church and the Pope. Yet his short life continues to ripple across the world, proving that holiness is not bound by age or time.
The Road to Sainthood
Carlo’s path to sainthood included the recognition of two miracles:
- The healing of a Brazilian boy suffering from a rare pancreatic disease.
- The recovery of a young Costa Rican woman who survived severe head trauma after a biking accident.
These miracles confirmed what so many already knew, that Carlo’s intercession is powerful, and his life is a modern witness of holiness.
Why Carlo Speaks to Today’s Generation
Carlo’s canonization is deeply symbolic. He represents a new kind of role model for Catholics: one who grew up in the digital world yet lived with deep faith and humility. He shows us that the internet can be used for good, that it can spread truth, beauty, and God’s love.
In a world so often marked by division, distraction, and noise, Saint Carlo Acutis offers a refreshingly simple path to holiness. He reminds us to keep the Eucharist at the center of life, to use our gifts for God’s glory, and to live each day with joy and kindness. His life proves that even in the modern age, faith can be lived with clarity, purpose, and love.
Carlo’s sainthood is already sparking devotion across the world. On the very day of his canonization, a new church in Kochi, India was blessed in his honor. Relics of Carlo are being venerated in schools and parishes, drawing the faithful closer to his witness. Most beautifully, young Catholics are rediscovering prayer and Eucharistic devotion through his story. This global response shows that Carlo is not just a saint for Italy or the Church. He is truly a saint for the entire digital generation.
