Mark Your Calendar: September 7, 2025

This year, the Catholic Church will celebrate a truly historic moment: the canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati on Sunday, September 7, 2025, in St. Peter’s Square. Pope Leo XIV will declare both young men saints— highlighting the Church’s growing recognition of lay holiness in the modern world.

Though they lived nearly a century apart, Carlo and Pier Giorgio are united in spirit. Both lived vibrant, joy-filled lives rooted in prayer, charity, and love for others. Their canonization reminds us that sainthood isn’t only for mystics or monks—it’s for students, hikers, coders, and everyday Catholics trying to live for Christ.

Blessed Carlo Acutis: The Millennial SaintSt. Carlo Acutis Medal

Born in 1991 and raised in Italy, Carlo was a teenager like many others—he loved video games, soccer, and technology. But his faith set him apart. A daily communicant with deep devotion to the Eucharist, Carlo created a website cataloging Eucharistic miracles around the world to help others grow closer to Jesus.

He died of leukemia in 2006 at age 15, offering his suffering for the Church and the pope. In 2020, he was beatified, and after a second miracle was approved, he’s now set to become the first canonized millennial saint.

Pier Giorgio Frassati was born in 1901 into a wealthy Italian family. Despite his privileged background, he chose a life of radical charity. He was known for giving away his money, visiting the sick, and advocating for justice. At the same time, he was full of joy—he climbed mountains, joked with friends, and loved the outdoors.

He died suddenly of polio at just 24 years old. His funeral shocked his family: thousands of the poor showed up to mourn the young man who had quietly helped them all. In 1990, Pope John Paul II beatified Pier Giorgio and called him “a man of the Beatitudes.”

Why This Canonization Matters

This canonization is about more than two new saints—it’s a powerful reminder that young people today can live heroic virtue, even in a busy, noisy, modern world. Carlo and Pier Giorgio show us that holiness is not about escaping the world, but transforming it with love.

Their lives challenge us to ask:

  • How can I serve others more generously?
  • Am I rooted in prayer and the sacraments?
  • What gifts can I use to point others toward Christ?

Verso l’alto – To the Heights!

Carlo once said, “All people are born as originals, but many die as photocopies.” Pier Giorgio’s favorite phrase was “Verso l’alto!”—“To the heights!”

Let’s honor their legacy by striving for the heights of holiness in our own lives.
